Do you think we can advance without society? Society is important because it provides us with a system and a platform to work together for the betterment of the world. With the collective efforts of the society, we are able to improve our living and social conditions. For example; we have electricity, because someone invented the idea of electricity generation and its use. We are advancing due to the collective social efforts. Without society, we are just Homo sapiens (animals).
Yes, social issues are eating out our society but there are more advantages than disadvantages. Discrimination, jealousy, racism, a few social norms, poverty, overpopulation, and inequalities are some of the major disadvantages of society. By taking care of each other and by focusing on the basic purpose of society, we can eradicate these social issues.
It is not the question of importance or no importance. It is the question of interdependence of the individual and the society. Society is made of people like you and me. You and I are not only individuals but we are also part of a team called society. When a group of people come together with a common agenda they do so on certain common understandings which form the basis of social system. If you need something from this society for yourself then you also need to fulfil certain obligations towards the society. So there is a give and take between the individual and society based on certain agreed principles which is going to enrich both the individual and society.
Having said this both the individual and the society are both dynamic entities. The needs and requirements and expectations change and accordingly the rules of interaction between them change. Sometimes individual changes faster than society and vice versa and a period of conflict or adjustment comes into play every time there is a change because of the refusal of one of the parties to accept the changes. Also there are vested interests in the society who are benefited by certain set of prevailing rules of the game. These vested interests will try to safe guard there interests by hook or crook leading to violent interactions between individuals and society.
So we can say that both society and individuals are important for a healthy environment and change is most important. If the change comes in the form of an evolution it will be less painful and more enduring. If change comes in the form of a revolution then both society and the individual suffer and in all probability the change will not enduring.
